Teaching Compound Words with a Frog Theme
What do the words dragonfly, sunshine and bullfrog have to do with each other? Not only are they all related to frogs, frog habitat and our Frog Unit Study they are also compound words. It is possible to separate each of these words into two words with no letters left over.
How could you separate dragonfly? That's right, dragon and fly. What about bullfrog? Bullfrog can be separated into bull and frog. Finally sunshine can be separated into sun and shine.
Compounds words are one of my favorite kinds of words to teach. I love the way that they are formed from two recognizable words.This hub is full of fun, hands-on, creative games and activities for helping beginning readers learn compound words related to a Frog Themed Unit Study.We will create an Interactive Bulletin Board and make matching compound word games.

Frog Themed Compound Words
Cover a bulletin board with pond blue paper and decorate pond with reeds, Cattails and lilypads.
Split the compound words into individual words and write one word on each frog shaped paper. Laminate the frog cards.
We used the following compound words for our Frog Unit Study Bulletin Board:
- bullfrog
- sunshine
- rainbow
- springtime
- leapfrog
- blackbird
- cattail
- downpour
- driftwood
- duckweed
Most of the words were familiar to the children but some, like duckweed, driftwood and cattail were not as familiar. I introduced them by showing examples while we were down at the pond. Duckweed is a small plant that grows in masses in the sunny portions of the frog pond. Ducks like to land on the pond, turn themselves upside down and nibble on the duckweed.
Make logs and write the compound words on the logs. Then write the compound words on logs. The children hop the frogs onto the correct logs.
